Dekker decided to come exactly three weeks before his due date- just like his big brother Josh. In fact, with both Josh and Dekker, my water broke at about 3am. The difference is that that's what started 11 hours of labor and 45 minutes of pushing with Josh, and it's what pushed Dekker into "active labor" which took me from 3.5 cm to 10cm in one hour. I'd been having consistent and increasing contractions for about 5 hours before my water broke, but wasn't progressing, or dialating much until then. Because I was three weeks early, the nurses couldn't admit me or give me pain medication until I was in active labor- I just sat in a monitoring room for 3 hours as the contractions got stronger. Once my water broke though, I went through transition so fast I didn't even have time for an epidural. Because I was screaming for some sort of relief they gave me a spinal inection- which helped me through the last 15-20 minutes, but has left me with horrible headaches. Lesson learned? I'll be taking lamaaz classes with the next so I'm prepared to handle the labor naturally in case the next one comes just as fast.
